hello world

So, sorry about the site issues as of late.  Right now you have to type in “www.mikeromo.com” to get here--I am trying to figure out what is what...the hard thing about this stuff is that I usually deal with it so rarely, so I will fix something then straight up forget all about it.  But I guess I am on some new server that’s much better and more powerful than I will ever know, so perhaps it will be faster, which will be good once I get those videos up that I keep talking about but never seem to find.

Had a good “actor” experience the other day.  I am on avail for this Internet only ad campaign, which is good exposure.  The spot is basically a monologue and they changed the text the evening before I was supposed to audition...basically added a page more, so I was working with a 2.5 page script, give or take.  Now, this is pretty unusual, at least, I have not been given this much material to prepare, but I basically assumed I needed to memorize the whole piece, which I did that night.  I went through it over and over, rehearsed it a few times...went over it right before I went to sleep, and then, when I woke up, did it in my head before I got out of my bed.  My psych teacher recommended that method, to memorize something before you go to sleep and then touch it right as you wake up to, I don’t know, connect the memories together or something.  Works like a charm, though, so I have always done it.

So, I get to the audition early because I have a meeting right after and I kinda wanted to be the first one to go in.  I figured that if they are indeed making everyone do the full spot, it could take forever to get through the auditions, so I did not want to wait.  I also wanted to get the audience while they were fresh and not bored of the material.

After talking a bit with the casting director, who has been amazing for me this year, she brings me in all the time and is just super supportive, she asked me if I had a chance to check out the new sides (script) and I told her that I was all memorized and ready to do the whole thing if they asked for it. She was clearly very happy that I had actually memorized it, which was quite cool.  When I got in, I saw they just had the first two paragraphs written on the boards and just went for the whole thing...and it went great!  Totally great.  Lots of laughing (the funniest parts occur later in the monologue) and basically a really positive response.

So that’s cool--and if I had not done all those plays and monologues, I wouldn’t have even thought about doing the whole thing.  (This was nothing compared to the 8 or 9 page monologue I did for one show...yikes!)

We’ll see.

Had a nice chat with my Steven, my theatrical agent...he had this postcard announcing the Yale School of Drama’s showcase that was coming up.  This was the big deal with going to a grad program like that: you would produce a showcase and do it in front of all kinds of agents and managers and producers in New York and LA.  It’s funny how my life would have been so much different if I did actually get into grad school.  In a way, I now honestly don’t mind that I never got in, now that I know more of what this is all about.  (Of course, if I had been able to make it into the Globe’s Shakespeare program that would have been a bit different, I will admit.)  It was interesting to look at the card, with all these fresh and energetic faces, all of them ready to “make it” in this business.  Good luck, guys!

Got a nice email from Nick, who did a performance at the Public Theatre...what a pimp.

Okay, well, the site is back up; I am going to go look for that Fallon spot and if I get it, post it.
